Golden Rules for Name Card Design

Use both sides of the name card! All listed price for name card printing on iDesign are for double side printing, there is no extra cost for using the both side of the name card. Imagine you’ve just doubled your opportunity to communicate with a potential client with your name card. What can you put on the back of name card? You can have a list of your services, some testimonial from your pleased client or your biography or create something useful on it like a calendar or a discount coupon.

Name card is all about you, so make sure your name card says something about you. There are a lot of boring name cards out there because when someone started a new business, and create a name card was one of the items on their must do list. Do not create a name card just because you have to do it put some thought into it. Make it special, unique of style, creative on tag line, and indicative of the special qualities you bring to your business.

Make the important information easy to find. Do not bury that phone number in a cluster of print. Make it stand out.

This sounds like common sense, but make sure it is clear what you do. I stopped at my local Chamber of Commerce this week to pick up some name cards. Let me give you some sample business names, and see if you can guess what these people do:

  • Your One Stop Shop
  • Ah Seng’s Shop
  • Customer Friendly Store
  • Beautiful Charming Enterprises

Please guys, do not make it hard for people to do business with you!

Emphasize the benefits of doing business with you. Whether it’s in a tag line under your business name or in a list, make sure you tell prospective customers what they will get from doing business with you.

  • Features = qualities of your product or service
  • Benefits = what those features mean to your client

Do not be road kill on the information superhighway: Include your web site address and e-mail address on your card. This should always be included just like your phone number.

Announce your Unique Selling Proposition(USP). You should have one, and you should proclaim it loudly and proudly on your name card. It is what makes your different from your competitors. Whether it is price, product, location, guarantee, your personality, or something else, there should be something that makes you stand out.

Include your logo on your name card. All of your business materials should establish a recognizable branding image for your business, so make sure that your name card matches your letterhead and brochures. You may be sick of it, but your prospects aren’t. Remember the Law of Seven–someone needs to see your name at least seven times before they will try to do business with you. Having a consistent company image makes it that much easier to make an impression.

Do something really different. Use a picture name card. Or a phone card. Or a card shaped like a pencil or a key or a computer by custom die cut. You want people to notice and remember you. Do not be stodgy just because that’s what you’ve always done. Always try something new!

Pass out your name cards! Try this: Hand a name card to everyone you speak to tomorrow–tellers, cashiers, servers. You will be amazed how many people that is! Also, include a couple in the envelope each time you pay bills or send invoices or thank you notes to customers. Leave your name cards on bulletin boards in cafes and laundromats. Leave them everywhere!
